For many years Portugal has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, with visitors coming from destinations throughout Europe to sample the natural charm of this beautiful part of the Iberian Peninsula. Issues which have affected other markets, such as over-development and over-supply, seem unlikely in the Portuguese property market due to strict legislation restricting the density of development in specific areas.

The market for investment property in Portugal presents a solid option for investors who are looking for a long term opportunity. Today, investors are enjoying higher rental returns of up to 10% in Portugal, particularly in the ever popular golfing and beach resorts where a considerable amount of off-plan investment is beginning to come online.

Aside from the obvious demand from tourism, other factors lend credibility to the argument for purchasing an investment property in Portugal. Recent membership to the EU has meant that the relative cost of living in Portugal is beginning to rise, however the low cost of living does present opportunities to purchase property at levels which represent a good investment. Recently however, other coastal resorts such as the Blue Coast south of Lisbon, the Green Coast around Porto and the Silver Coast region have all seen considerable increases in popularity with investors, as a number of superb new developments have been built in the region. These areas have allowed investors to capitalise on the lower cost of living and subsequently property prices in these more rural regions.

Overall, the market for property in Portugal represents a good opportunity for a long term investment, with its low of cost of living and property, increasing levels of tourism and improved accessibility through cheap flights. Today, the increasing number of off-plan developments and golf resorts in Portugal are beginning to increase the accessibility of the region to international property investors.
